Africa Cup of Nations - odds on Africa's crown
The Africa Cup of Nations is the championship of Africa's national teams, staged by CAF every two years under the sponsored title TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations — CAN, in the francophone half of the continent. Twenty-four qualified sides contest the finals through groups and a knockout bracket. Nothing is promoted and nothing relegated; the continental crown is the entire argument.
🏆 A tournament born in Khartoum
Sudan's bond with this cup predates everyone else's. The country stood among the founders of CAF and staged the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1957, in Khartoum. Thirteen years later the trophy stayed home: in the final of 16 February 1970 Sudan beat Ghana 1:0 through Hasabu El-Saghir's goal and took the African title on its own soil.
⚽ The Falcons of Jediane, present tense

The national side — the Falcons of Jediane — flew to the 2025 finals in Morocco and reached the round of 16, where they held a 1:0 lead over Senegal. On the road towards the 2026 World Cup the same opponent was twice held to 0:0, and after five rounds of that qualifying campaign Sudan sat top of its group. The next assignment: Group J of the 2027 qualifiers, alongside Senegal, Mozambique and Ethiopia, opening in September 2026.
Year | Sudan's milestone |
|---|---|
1957 | Hosted the first AFCON in history, in Khartoum |
1970 | Champions of Africa at home — 1:0 over Ghana in the final |
2025 | Round of 16 at the finals in Morocco |
2026 | Group J of the 2027 qualifiers begins in September |
Qualification for the finals gathers 48 teams into 12 groups of four; the top two of each group claim the 24 places at the tournament proper.
Pamoja 2027: three hosts at once
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania share the next edition — the first time three countries co-host, and the competition's first visit to East Africa in 51 years, since Ethiopia in 1976. The curtain rises on Saturday 19 June 2027, and the trophy match is dated Saturday 17 July 2027 — with both days landing on Sudan's Friday-Saturday weekend.
A 2025 title decided in March
Morocco holds the current crown, a second after 1976 — and it was awarded off the pitch. Senegal had won the Rabat final of 18 January 2026 by 1:0 in extra time, Pape Gueye scoring in the 94th minute; on 17 March 2026 CAF's appeals body turned that result into a 0:3 forfeit over the Senegalese players' mid-match exit from the pitch, and the crown passed to Morocco. Senegal lodged an appeal with CAS on 25 March 2026.
